I don't know why everybody's crapping on the pit crew anyway. One guy wears the goat horns for Pocono and it's the crew chief. Amazing, unbelievable, tremendous car done in by beyond woeful strategy at the end of stage two. Jake made an argument for staying out there and keeping the playoff point, but I am 100% in favor of keeping control of the race after the 18 pitted and should have forced their hand into also pitting and not caring about the one playoff point when five was easily attainable for winning the race. This team's constant need to cede control of races is just staggering. Nobody was beating him unless the team started looking like a monkey humping a doorknob, and alas, that's what happened. With strategy, the ability to clearly get their cars much, much better during the race, and yes the speed of the pit crew, the difference on pit road and the pit box between the 18 and the 4 is a big, huge, massive, glaring advantage for the 18. I know some will come along and blame Aric and/or his crew chief for the contact on pit road, but Harv should have never been back there in the first place. This isn't difficult. If Kevin consistently comes out in a worse position than he comes in (which is true), and Kevin's pit crew is consistently slower than the pit crews of the other top teams (which is true), then Kevin's pit crew simply isn't good enough. BOTH Pocono races were lost on pit road imo. On late race cautions, slow pit stops cost Kevin dearly. It wasn't Kevin's fault. It wasn't Rodney's fault. It was the fault of the crew. They CONSTANTLY lose spots on pit road - and do so especially on the money stops late in the race. His BEST stop yesterday was 12.9, and he had multiple stops in the high 13's and even one in the 14's. That's simply not good enough. And because they are SO FAR below the pit crews of JGR teams, Kevin will have an immensely difficult time winning the championship UNLESS the cautions play out perfectly and he is leading with 40 to go and there are no cautions the rest of the way. ANY late race caution at Homestead and I'd bet my house that they lose the race. |
