Looking for people's stories, opinions or just a discussion. Jill shot down this post a few years ago and told me it was to speculative and finger pointing. Well she can't do that here
2007. Remember when RCR was called out on bleeders? Filed rims was the word. Just so happened that RCR was in the process of ordering 300 new wheels after that and everything was swept under the rug. If your asking me if I believe it happened? Yes I do. Second race of the year at California there was a red flag with a couple laps to go and Kevin's tire went flat during it. They weren't called out till I believe the 2nd Richmond race that year.
2001. I was at the Pepsi 400 that year and Jr had a car that was unbeatable. I remember him saying he had to run half throttle to not pull away from the field. He passed 6-7 cars all by himself with no help on the last restart. I read a few years later that DEI was using exotic metals in their engines that would warp at high temps. Obviously that would create gaps for more air to get past the restricter plate. Being there in person and seeing how easy it was for him to pass compared to everyone else I do believe that one too.
I remember posting a lot more than this but can't jog my memorie right now. Evernham used to lay blankets over the nose of his cars and pull it off right before his cars would leave pit road for qual and races. Some speculated he was hiding things in the rear end but kept everybody's attention on the noses by hiding them. I remember before they started with these movable trailing arms this year that the year before you could visibly see biffles left rear tire drive forward in the wheel well when he got back in the gas. Anybody who seen late models knows how this works. They were onto this way before anybody else but didn't figure it out like the other guys. Rousch used the late model approach while the other guys found a way for it to stay there once it moved.
Can anybody think of anymore examples of bending the rules? I know I'll think of more and post them when I do.

Another one. Can't say it was a cheat but something was going on. Everybody knows Chad is the best at working in the gray areas of the rule book. Don't remember what year but it was around the 48's 4th or 5th championship year. Jimmie won 3 of the first 4 races. Then they just quit running good. Chad took out or away whatever they were doing. Everybody was talking all summer how hendrick was lost. Well once the chase started Jimmie dominated again. So whatever Chad was doing he stopped doing for 20 races to keep it secret. Brought it back race 1 of the chase and won another championship in dominant fashion.
Once at Indy the 5 car broke something in the front end in the first 5 laps. 5 laps later the 24 has something break in the front end. The noses of these cars were slammed to the ground the rest of the race. Don't remember if either won. Next race at sanoma I believe the 48 has something break in the front end the first couple laps.
Anybody remember the martinsville race where the 48 beat the 24? Remember how hard the 24 was beating the bumper off the 48 and couldn't get around him? Traction control? I've never seen anybody get rammed that hard and not spin a tire from the jolt. He just kept it perfectly straight while Jeff was ramming him in the middle and ramming him driving out of the corners. On pit road before they pulled onto the track at the start of the race , multiple times that year the 24 or 48 would have radio problems and someone would have to climb in the passenger side window to "connect a new radio". Kevin called them out even over the radio once saying it's mighty suspicious how they always seem to have radio problems right before the race.

Yrah I remember most of those. Years ago, Gordon and Ray on dipping their tires. I believed that one. I do like and remember, can't think of the race, but think it was Indy. Harvicks car had the plug in the fuel overflow tube, they got caught, but I thought that was pretty smart. Kenseth had that mysterious panel that kept coming loose under the back end to allow the air buildup to escape, that one was good too.

I remember those all too well. There's a lot of brilliant minds in the garage area today. A friend of mine that works at JRM was telling me about how the Eurys were the first to start using clear-coat on their superspeedway cars to make them more 'slick' through the air. Most teams have stopped doing that now because the bodies will probably get torn up anyways.
What's even more amazing about Chad Knaus is he's a self-taught engineer. I don't believe he even has a degree, if I'm not mistaken. Rodney is just as brilliant when it comes to making the car go fast. Maybe not so much as strategy and in-race adjustments as Chad, but initial setup and getting the car fast in practice for sure.
A lot of people say NASCAR should loosen up on the rules, but I personally like seeing what these guys can do with an even smaller box to work in. It's really incredible what these guys come up with the work around the rules.

For a long time I thought the bleeder valves in '07 was just jealousy because of how good the 29 and 31 were running at the time. BUT, with it coming out in 2015 that Newman's team was doing something similar really kind of solidified to me that something was probably going on in 2007.

I was so pissed off at Hamlin for bringing that stuff up I figured the same thing, jealousy. Like you said when Newman was busted, I was a bit disapointed. I don't like cheaters, but if you can can find something in the grey area that can help and there is no rule against it, I say use it! It's been going on since racing its self. However if you break a rule and are caught cheating, throw the book at them and suspend the whole team, as long as it's not for missing lugnuts at the end of a race;Im talking significant cheating. Forget the fines that doesnt work, they have way too much money.

Sometimes I like seeing how clever these teams can be! Just like when the 48 jack man started using his body to dent the side of the car during a pit stop. Lol!

That reminds me of when the quarter panels used to be round. Biffle would tag the rr on the exit and flatten it out. The announcers would always talk about how loose Biffle was. I think DW used to say he biffed it whenever anybody would tag the wall because Biffle did it so often. Turns out he was doing it on purpose to create that big flat quarter panel they run now days

If it is a rule or you step out of the grey area by even the smallest of margins, suspend the whole team, car number included. THAT WOULD stop outright cheating.
