Last year was my 31st year watching NASCAR. I've had the pleasure of watching Dale Earnhardt, Darrell Waltrip, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick, and hundreds of other guys ply their trades and demonstrate their excellence. I had accepted the manufacturer change for Harv, but the rumored changes about race formats, breaking up races into segments or some other crap might be enough for me to find something else to do on Sunday afternoons.
The Cup Series is great because of the endurance, the stamina, the need for equipment to last hundreds of miles to determine who is the best on that day and throughout the year. Breaking up races like they do in lower series takes that away. I don't need a caution clock, heat races, or some other stupid gimmick. Keep that stuff in lower series and on short tracks where it might be needed.
I just want NASCAR to be what it has been, and to quit trying to destroy its legacy, its present, and its future. The Chase already did that enough.

I know we all want and wish we could have Winston, Dale Earnhardt, and less commercials. C'mon guys, let's face it. This is not the mid 90s or early 2000s anymore. Just like any smart (I'm not calling NASCAR smart, they still do things that make me shake my head) organization, you have to adapt with change. The reality we live in today is that everyone wants something, and they want it RIGHT NOW.
A lot of today's NASCAR fans don't want to sit through 3 hours of racing to see who wins. They'd rather watch the start, go do something else, and come back for the finish. Why not? Hell, if I can watch the start, go to the grocery store, go play a PC game, and I can take my phone with me and still keep up with the race via Twitter or some other means of digital media, I'm going to do that instead of sitting down in front of the TV for 3 hours.
We just have so much access to everything now-a-days, its part of the cause of decline in viewership, and track attendance. Don't give me this crap about going to races costs too much, it doesn't. I went to the Chick-fil-A Peach bowl a couple of weeks ago where people were paying an average of $450 per ticket and bringing their whole families, and the place was packed. I walked up to Bristol last year for the night race and paid $40 for a $120 ticket. My Talladega tickets are $75 per ticket, and some of the best seats in the house right in the middle of the tri-oval.
As much as we like to try to find a scapegoat and blame someone else for what's going on. It's the ever going struggle of trying to adapt to the times. What worked 20-30 years ago is surely not going to work today.

That's Nascar trying to get there viewership and fans back to the track. They're not realizing the fact that making these changes may bring in a few new fans, but there losing their loyal fans that made them who they are!
I have been watching nascar since 92, because my Dad got me involved and he is a fan. One of my first races was watching Dale finally win the 500, that race got me hooked. Harvick winning his first gave me the same feeling.
I hope these changes are just rumors. Racing to me is a 500 mile race filled with strategy, pit stops, equipment failures, driver talent, crew talent, good and bad luck.
Although I do enjoy a good wreck from time to time, I have no interest in seeing a budweiser shoot-out every week thats filled with wrecks and mayhem. I like seeing the segment racing the way it is now. They race like this a couple times a year, it's a non points race event because of the carnage/BS, and they haven't been that good anyway in my opinion.
If they'd ask me, Nascar should try and create more strategy in a race. Make it so the tires ware out just enough so they mean something, not so much though that everyone needs to come to pit road. For me, more strategy, intersting tracks that are not cookie cutter, finding the best aero and tire package is what they should be doing.
The real racing is done in the middle of the race! Thats why a good driver, crew chief making good adjustments, pit crew with good stops, all this is the thrill of racing to me! Not a 100 lap shoot-out when the driver who wins dodged the wrecks or when there is Phantom cautions thrown to bunch the field back up to make it more interesting.
Maybe this is the direction nascar will go. Just maybe this is one of the reasons Carl retired? There are alot of drivers who wouldnt like shoot-out formats that usually end in mayhem.
Since Nascar trys to be like the NFL so much, they should look and see that there is still 4 quarters of football being played! When watching a game and seeing a good running back and offense waring out a defense in the 2nd and 3rd quarter so they're gassed in the 4th, thats the thrill! For me it's what a team does in the middle that decides how well they do in the end...

I agree. I started watching in 92 also. At this point in my life if they change anymore I'll get my sundays back. I'm the type of guy that watches 500 laps sitting on the couch on a 85 degree day at the lake. My wife shakes her head at me but I enjoy it. I race online so I understand what's going on in the middle of these races. There's strategy and working on your car. What I've hated the most about NASCAR over the last 16 years is these 1.5 mile tracks. Bulldoze Kansas, Chicago, Kentucky ,ect... I wish these were short tracks.

I did happen to watch the 79 500 on tv. Being a New Yorker, I can't remember the so called snow storm the they say shut down the north east that weekend that help the viewing stats. As a kid of 16, there was always a snow storm back then. Fast forward to 92-93, I was at a friend's house watching a race (I can't even remember which one) he was a Mark Martin fan and he kept cussing "that Damn Earnhardt and his black #3. So being the friend I was, I kept rubbing him telling him I hope he wins. Low and behold Dale won and I was hooked. (sorry this is long) fast forward, February 94, I won tickets on the radio to the Busch race at The Rock. So we bought tics to the cup race, made it the weekend, tail gating, slept in a roach infested motel and the wife and I now have over 90 race's since. Usually 4-6 a year, but done 8 twice with a couple of back to backs. I still fly my Winston Cup flag, faded and slightly torn. First bad change- changing the points. Yes it should be how you run all year, period. Second- the chase, refer to first bad change. Third- having a football wannabe owner running NASCAR. Forth thru present- changing tracks, tires, aero this, aero that, spoilers, 'the car of tomorrow', you name it. NASCAR is not like any other sport, it truly is a way of life. But like you all have said, that way is changing and for most old time fans, not for the good. No other sport, not even soccer overseas has thousands, tens of thousands even that tailgate for 2, 3 and 4 days before the event. Yes all these changes are the reasons I believe attendance and tv is down. The chase and now this bs of 16 brings in fans, but they're also losing old hard core fans more. It's obvious, how can they not see that. Get rid of the cookie cutter tracks, get rid of the chase, open the restrictor plates enough to where you have to tap the brakes b4 the turns or you'll slingshot your butt into the wall, lighten up on all the rules but hammer (complete 3, 4, 5...week) race team (car, crew, owner and driver) suspension, and not back to bias ply tires, but tires that fall off more. Thanks for letting me vent, but I'm with you all on this. To much change, I'm slowly losing interest and fear it's only a matter of time that I start to not watching and attending.

By the way, I've heard of these hinting changes back in September October, just looked on nascrap.com and didn't see anything new on it. Where are you hearing and seeing this?

I heard something like Nascar was kicking it around on Claire Lang's radio show the other day.

I like it. It's really no different than what you'd see at a lot of local Saturday night short-tracks. Honestly though, for me, I don't care what they do. I'll still watch because I love cars, and racing.

Ill hold off on passing judgement till the press conference---just dont think we need more gadgetry in the series I watch it in the truck series--and its cool to even a lopsided playing field---dont know about this series

It's at least exciting for now, something new.

I just think it's annoying that they keep changing it, regardless of what it is. It takes away credibility; no other major sport does that

Nascrap just held the nail to their own coffin and Denny, Dale, Jeff, Jeff and Brad just nailed it in. More to follow.
