NASCAR is going to have some rough years ahead... A lot of massive miss steps that seemed to be financially motivated. And plenty of things that were out NASCARs control.
Here are some of those miss-steps, I feel that have hurt in the long run...
+ D shaped ovals (Increased seating capacity … more $$$)
+ Car of tomorrow and that wing! (Trying to be too euro)
+ HD / reduced HP (Cars are supposed to be hard to drive.. might as well paint the racing line on the track!
+ Playoff style season finally (caters to you millennials but disregards the core fan)
+ Progressive banked tracks (Name a track that it actually helped! Pretty much ruined Bristol)
+ PJ1 to fixed the poor quality of racing (again name a track that it actually helped)
+ Here is a tough one... Losing to many fan favs (Dale Jr /Tony /Kenseth) and Jimmy not running well
+ Ford, Chevy and Dodge going bankrupt and losing Dodge
+ Another tough one... Toyota becoming a major financial power in NASCAR. Everyone said they would when they started.
+ Some argue that NASCAR has be pandering to Toyota with rule changes... Drop in HP
+ I'd say the High Downforce package was also pushed heavily by Toyota
+
Move of the Title race to Phoenix... favoring the Toyota strengths
+ I' sure that there a more but it all points to a lot of poor miss steps.
As attendance falls and those huge D shaped ovals can not support the lack of attendance, I see NASCAR moving back to the smaller tracks. Back to its roots. And then it will self balance … Racing will be better and the true race fans will return.
